Small Group Notes: Work Group and Learning Organization
These notes are from my small group notebook and are my interpretation of how current unskilled workers can work in this new age. I spend my time everyday in an effort to get a group of workers organized to do planned work with purpose they recognize them selves rather than work by necessity for income.
The subjects in this book are hopelessly scattered and I don't have many examples to support my claims. I write this manuscript because it needs to be written.

Purpose
The purpose of this material is to provide a starting point for planning and creating a stable workplace, encourage entrepreneurship and excellence in workmanship to unskilled workers who want to work more comprehensively. This reading material is written with the idea that unskilled workers can have the same progressive and rewarding life style that workers in other classes of the American workforce experience by working in groups.
Using today's concepts, information distribution, technology and self-improvement options, I believe most workers are capable of changing their own linear thinking habits to a naturally progressive thinking experience. Linear thinking may have worked for people when nature ruled our actions. Now that times have changed we have incredible and wonderful opportunities to manage our own changes rather than adjust to changes that occur around us. We also have the need.
To word it another way, we are turning the way we spend our time effort and thinking from cooperative to generative. This is a very basic part of life and the idea that you and the way you see the world around you may change as a result of these efforts you will make.
This idea comes from knowing, as a young worker, I was not going to live the good life that I thought I should. In school and on television saw and heard about life and experiences that I wasn't experiencing. I knew then I didn't have what it takes to get good jobs and benefit from the good opportunities in America. I had been following my twin brother around from job to job and in life. It didn't seem to work. I felt something was missing in me and later in life a child psychologist indicated I was unaware.
The suggestions I make in this material originate from the interpretation that my environments influence my personal condition and capability. These suggestions are with the intent to improve our work environments using planned work and self-employment training.
This one change in our employment behavior will improve our experience of living, working and participating as citizens.
It is an attempt at changing my own linear based thinking into a more natural based thinking.
Introduction:
I am certain work would not be such a terrible experience and result
if we would learn to think and work comprehensively.
Although it has been disappointing to suspect that my personal condition and qualities were only a fraction of what they could be, I do find value in the opportunity to challenge the source and cause of this weakness. It has now become enjoyable work. Now thanks to good and dedicated book writers and technology, each worker has an increased opportunity to make the activity of making adjustments to our society to fix the causes and the problems as we experience them. It can become a way of life because it is a very good experience. I suspect it pays well with experience partly because the suggestions I make are actually an alternative lifestyle than what we have been shown, and is simply an update to our existing lifestyles.
It is apparent that random work environment design is the largest contributor to limiting mental condition and capability that we experience today. I believe I am not the only worker in America who feels this way.
Make no mistake. The employer should not be called upon to give us anything they haven't already. We are fully capable and empowered by both our capabilities and conditions, to make these changes in our work and environments ourselves.
If we can improve our own attitudes, master effective work habits, improve thoughts and intentions, create a better relationship to profit and money and bring the use of technology and up-to-date knowledge to our work place we would be competitive with other businesses within a short time if we focus on the types of work that we can do effectively. As it is the concepts that we depend on don't seem to fit our society and as a result our society seems to have outgrown us except for our hands to do some work. Some of us find that when we try to do just about anything with our lives, we seem to have only partial success and the changing world seems to tear down or bypass our limited success. The result is we find we have to do it all over again. Sometimes the realization takes years for some of us to interpret and respond to effectively.
The workplace that we can get a job at is built on linear thinking. Scheduling our time around the linear based system forces us to follow the same linear based rules in other activities we spend our time with as well. With a focus on unity and interdependence we will have more progressive success in changing this line of thinking.
Our society is having difficulty and pain adjusting to changes in the ways and the reasons the work in America gets done. Upper level people have tried to correct the problem, with perhaps some success, but not enough to overcome our own fears of the future. Continuously I ask myself what it will take for the needed changes to take place. Can the upper level people do for us what we need done? Apparently not. Then what will it take for the workers to take responsibility and make the changes that need to be made in the way we handle our own selves?
Our opportunities to challenge our problems have increased tremendously over the past thirty years. If we truly have a chance to manage some of the changes that take place in our own future and we do nothing but what we are told and forced to do, we may loose what ever chances we do have. Our world seems to have some, us-it-or- loose it conditions and participation in the management of our own society may be one of them. You can check the facts out for your self but generally when people are working for something using time, energy, hope and effort, they find worth and value in the total experience. Going beyond that, if the same people continue with planned effort in a focused subject, skill and background knowledge develops. To this recognition you can productively ask your self why are we not active in successful pursuit of purely wholesome and incredible opportunities with a progressive and rewarding experience.
This work effort would be healthier than other work options because it requires more of the life experiences that we are capable of learning from. For example: we would need to compromise more often but we would benefit more often from the compromises we make because we would learn how to compromise with gain. When a condition is commonplace, but adjustable, it is easier to learn from and learn about.
INTERDEPENDENCE, DEPENDENCE, AND INDEPENDENCE:
Dependence and independence in our concepts have been out of proportion and over emphasized for today's conditions and qualities and have been building weak and deteriorating structure to our society. Interdependence is more suited for the use of technologies and access to knowledge as it is structured. The group concepts that I am suggesting are an example of interdependence. Hierarchy is an example possessing high conditions of both independence and dependence. Of course it is true that probably all of the conditions around us have all three types of dependence.
The fact is people need each other but the way we need each other can be adjusted by changing the proportions of dependency in these three areas. Information, reliability and connectivity will all flow more freely when we are actively using these concepts.
A good mix of all three with each one being adjustable to us at our discretion is most desirable but if the dependency is to much larger in proportion to interdependence and independence, making adjustments to any of it can be very difficult, depending on the conditions we are dependent on. Working in groups helps overcome this limiting effect and is described in association with other books.
Explaining your thoughts in small parts to other people in your work group gives reason and pathways to the idea of interpreting your thoughts more clearly in your own mind so you can understand them better. In part, a paraphrase to "Making small groups work" Gretchen Buher as told to David Walbert.

I am not sure which of these topics need explanation but Record keeping and reviewing can be an informative part of progress and a source of ideas. Similar to active reading, explained later, reviewing records of ideas can be part of a search for comparisons that can be made in any type of work to improve how we connect and relate to the idea.
Results of experiments are also a source for something to review. Study examples refer to efforts made by professionals. These examples may be for sale on the market in book form. We can ask professionals in the field we work in about where to get information on a particular subject or type of experiment.
Writing of current reality might be a very informative way of interpretation and research. Writhing about anything is very informative about my thoughts and how thorough they are. It gives me a chance to see what might make sense to somebody else.
Professional evaluations: Any thing can be professionally evaluated. Instead of paying money to identify how to proceed on some minor issue that is holding us up we may be able to provide an investment option. If we have a stable work group, it can be a rewarding relationship on a continuing basis. Professional relationships are worth having. They are an example of what business respects for us to emulate and learn from.
I believe in an idea that Group guided self-education can be our own study of a subject that improves our ability to do our work of current choice and can include professional educators and their lesson plans.
Study Examples: Examples of how to do just about any work can be found on the Internet and around town. The search would be to improve our interpretation of the work or anything about it.
The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge and communication related instruction such as Nonviolent Communication by Marshall B. Rosenberg will be our first Primary Sources of Introduction.
Mental Images
"Mental Images" determine how we make sense of the world and how we take action". Paraphrasing The Fifth Discipline. As for myself I find that when I find a job and I am shown what work to do, I also re-establish the mental images, habits, thoughts and interpretations about how best to survive in life, and be as prosperous, creative or as thrifty as I can while still maintaining the habits that I think present a good image.
Consider each concept that we depend on for income, image what to spend money on, when not to spend money, happiness and self-respect is like a corral or maybe a single brick on a walkway or bar on a jail cell. Are you jailed, corralled or following a path? Did you crate it? If so, is it all your own? If not who created it and when was it created, or is it more of a; what created it? Did it come from business, family, school, work, heritage or self? Did you fall into it half-hazard or did you know your options? An easier way to ask it is; where do thoughts come from?
It seems to me that a lot of the mental models that make up how I interpret what my opportunities are, come from a work environment concept that may have been designed to benefit the needs of profit rather than to just get the work done that needs to be done. With that in mind a lot of my thoughts and interpretations need to be corrected but I can't see all of that now. I will have to wait until I have worked in my own design of a work environment before I can correct that.
A long time ago, hierarchy and pay for work may have been a good way to get the work done but things have changed. For one thing, when the now conventional concepts were identified as to how to design, make and use a work place were first being used and developed, most people in every part of the world were not at all well educated about work environment concepts. Now we have multiple forms of media and information source, education options and learning methods far beyond what was available when those concepts were considered in planning. We even have the option to use extraordinary methods to educate our selves and manage our education policy, direction and concepts.
Considering the amount of time we spend at work and for how long we spend that time every week to get pay, as we were taught was so good, we would do well to learn about the concepts behind it.
Another influence may be from excessive profit needs or wants.
Both interpretations represent an unnecessary source of social sickness and isolationism in our society that consumes and demands a lot of our time, forcing us to re-interpret our world more thoroughly than common talk.
In an effort to state a case for making an effort to improve the concepts that we depend on I will make statements that can be insulting but when they are true I live it myself.
Change is happening to us and around us but we don't seem to know very well how to manage or adjust to those changes. The common workplace design for the unskilled worker seems to be in conflict with the needs of the workers and our bodies.
Managing change while working for a living is difficult for everybody but the unskilled workers have a much harder time of it than other workers. By the time we finish adjusting our environment or life in some way we find that something else is messed up. We spent too much money or time and should have done something else first, ect. Then we find out we hurt someone along the way. I know that, maybe with instruction, many of us don't do this at all but I want to be descriptive about what is happening to some in the hopes that workers do not disqualify themselves and this effort thinking they could not work in a group or people can't work together.
I believe that most workers would be better off working in groups than in the common work place regardless of the appearance of limitation. With an individual effort to learn group skills, unskilled workers can learn to work together as much as any other group of workers. Therefore it seems to me that we might do much better by designing our own work environments rather than travel to a work environment that we get laid off or fired from or feel threatened by the possibility. This condition interferes with other parts of life and progress. I know I am not the only worker in America who constantly feels the results of my work, after hours of effort, is not good enough for the employer.
If we improve the concepts that we depend on we would have a better chance to decrease the mental chatter that seems to permeate so many of our lives and move increasingly towards active intent.
For those of us who are non-progressive, maybe you would want to consider moving away from the idea of working for a paycheck so you can do what you want when you are off work to making work a valuable part of life, learning and completeness so you have a rewarding and learning experience when you do it.
Most of the changes workers try to make to improve our environments are parts of the change that needs to be made. Sometimes changing part of something results in changing nothing at all. It has to be redone again and it looks bad when the effort falls apart. What really needs to be done is to design a fundamental and basic starting point for how to structure environments and life so both are adjustable when needed and progressive when it is time to ride the waves of change that happen all around us while still complementing nature.
Money: Money is terribly misunderstood among the poor and lower middle class and maybe even some other classes of people and it needs to be a subject here. New concepts and interpretations need to be crafted for us to use and plenty of books are available but usually not directed specifically to us. That's ok, information is very adaptable.
Money is not the root of all-evil, or any evil. It is a man made concept to measure value for using in trade with an immense benefit to development. It is whatever we make it or let it be. The key word as we are experiencing the influence from money today is "let". I am suggesting that we are letting money be a bad experience for us when we let others design all conditions we live in and depend on. Some examples are residential, employment, social spots like bars and nightclubs, educational, spiritual and television. Internet is a temporary exception because it is designed by a diverse group of people but it may get just like all the rest of our environments if we don't participate in the continuing design of it as an environment of ours.
"FOR MONEY
Money is a major form of extrinsic reward in our society. Choices prompted by a desire for reward are costly: they deprive us of the joy in life that comes with actions grounded in the clear intention to contribute to a human need. Money is not a 'need' as we define it in NVC: it is one of countless strategies that may be selected to address a need.
FOR APPROVAL
Like money, approval from others is a form of extrinsic reward. Our culture has educated us to hunger for reward. We attended schools that used extrinsic means to motivate us to study: we grew up in homes where we were rewarded for being good"… "and punished when our caretakers judged us to be otherwise." Marshall B. Rosenberg PH. D. (NVC) Nonviolent Communication Page 138
Progress: Progress also must be defended. Writing from experience progress is a natural result of our pain and intelligence combination. Within and woven throughout our conditions, decisions, methods and efforts, rewards, complaints, goodness and badness is both miraculous accomplishments and what might appear to be utter disappointing failure. But could it also be, that progress and pain is a nearly eternal, continuous force to improve all things we do and that we are until at last and finally it is that we are one with God.
An example can be made of the rising price of gas. If the gas prices go up even higher, do we see it as failure or a chance and a reason to question and see more truth about ourselves? Maybe we should, can and will do something about this problem as a problem to us. Are we going to make this happening occur as soon as we are capable or just wait till we are forced? Either way it is an example of progress. When this progress is made it is likely that we will find more efficient use of transportation.
When we experience pain we can see it as an indication that something needs to change, sometimes about ourselves. When we pursue that possible change sometimes we will find markets and opportunities as well as personal gains.
As an unskilled worker, most of my adult life I often felt bad and wasteful because I was not doing something more with my life and abilities. I assumed I was letting my family down by allowing myself to be tied up in my own needs and not experiencing the life I should be able to experience. "What a waste I let life be" and "How stupid of me" were feelings that wrapped around my time every place I went and separated me from loving anybody or anything. Now many group meetings, several doctors and three decades later, after I became aware of the issue, I wonder how many other unskilled workers live terrible pains out of misunderstanding.
"These interpretations bring some of us further to guilty feelings because we are taught this is all very selfish". Nonviolent Communications. Some of us can get consumed in ourselves and depressed. I have often felt that this condition is a major cause of suicide. How many generations do we have to do this before we overcome the cause? Methods are well within our reach.
The project that everybody has of putting a life together can be complex. One of the things we all have to do when we get a long-term job is build our time around it as we consider how long we are going to keep the job. When we do this we can't help but build our life around the job as well. The job is generally separated from our life and consequently a task is required of putting or assembling our life piece by piece. If we have been laid off to often, we have likely experienced difficult health and emotional conditions. With better work and employment concepts our surrounding life experience will be more natural and consistent, with better results in health and happiness.
Our own design to our environment may enable us to replace some of the "accustomed"…"culture where buying, earning and deserving are the standard modes of interchange" with "simple giving and receiving." Nonviolent Communication.
It stands to reason, naturally speaking, that if we work to get paid, we will be paid in minimal and linear streams. If we work in ready designed employment conditions we will get paid in minimal amounts and only for the time that we are working. It is hard to think past next week under those conditions. If we work to get the work done that is in our face and around us, we may get paid more resembling nature and harmony. Sometimes in working this way, income may grow tremendously and sometimes it maybe it won't grow at all. Either way one benefit to us is that we learn to connect to our world and work. In fact we must connect if we are going to improve our experience we have in living. Creating connectivity may not come easy but I know for sure, not having connectivity in proper relation to the rest of the world is disappointing and makes life and change difficult to manage. In relation to long held beliefs, since early in my intent to work in groups I have always intended to interpret environment and pay structure based on nature. As complicated as these ideas may seem at first, it will make life simpler than what we experience now.
WORKING HARD:
I will try to create an example of how our mental images influence us. Working hard does not mean doing what you don't want to do or working harder than you want to work. It means doing what you can to the best of your ability. There are of course consequences to our decisions. If we decide not to perform a task because it is to difficult, we may find that we have missed a good opportunity to earn better pay or make conditions better for ourselves.
Instead of keeping things acceptable sometimes we allow the continuation of minimal results. Sometimes we can't see the real opportunities and benefits until the opportunities are passed. To avoid this, an option that we must take if we are going to be successful, is to work hard until we have experience to know what the right attitudes are for us to have. If you ask business owners if they work hard some would say they always do and others would say their work is not very hard. Either way all or almost all of them had to work hard to create a business they could maintain.
Working hard must be a choice. With out having made that choice we never find our own capabilities. At the risk of being insulting, this is a failure of unskilled workers. The term "working hard" brings up an image in our heads from past and maybe current experiences that indicate something painful to us that usually end in waste or results not worthy of the benefits. These images probably come from both our own experiences at work and what other people have said and did that confirmed any suspicion we might have had that maybe "hard work" is not just a bad experience but something to avoid. This image that comes into our head is, in my own mind, a "Mental Images" and it describes a condition or situation that we tend to respond to or avoid.
Overcoming mental images and the conditions that created them can be a long road or a beautiful one. I hope not to make yours any longer than it needs to be for you. Take notice in the sentence at the beginning of this paragraph, there are two influences, "mental Images" and "conditions" that suggest the creating factors of making the road to recovery a lot shorter. Consider for example: if each of these conditions by them selves might take about forty percent of every bit of wit, courage, stamina, energy, talent and gifted unknowns you have within you to overcome, you cannot just overcome it using eighty percent of what you've got. If that would really work we would all take each influence one at a time and soon we would be successful. It often doesn't work because the conditions that created them in the first place can, and often does, recreate them after they are fixed. Sometimes we cannot fix difficulties one at a time. Fixing one at time may results in spinning our wheels. Making adjustments to both conditions at the same time can be five or ten times more complex.
When we avoid something we allow existing conditions. The way to overcome this dilemma is to move toward something rather than away from something. What you are moving away from can be different or the same as what you are moving towards, but either way it needs to be a conscious choice made by you.
Some examples of what people have moved towards or chosen successfully is college, starting their own business, working hard comprehensively, loving life just the way it is, asking for help, meditation and reading. I am not suggesting that you do any of these things, except reading, until you are working with a group you trust and have made similar choices and are will to doing the best that each worker can at doing what ever it takes to succeed. Instead I suggest that you start learning about groups and group efforts in your area and become familiar with working in groups.
THE REAL SUBJECT: The decision to do everything possible to make life and functionality happen productively, the way it could be, can be a difficult one. It is hard to consider all of the details, overwhelming as they are, all at once if you haven't been studying the subject at all. I can't inject it into your head. If you make no other decision, decide to study the subject of work. It is vast but you must. It gets easy and enjoyable because the information you will find will mean to you that life will get better, easier and more rewarding. It entertains me continuously.
A lot of people are trying very hard and doing a lot of work to make our society work. Please try and don't stop. If you need help in this ask questions at help.com, gather.com, yahoogroups.com and other group oriented web sites.
NO PLACE FOR BLAME AND ANGER: Blame and anger require a lot of energy and attention from both the angry and the blamed. When we do this we block to many other good choices. Both blame and anger are tied up in such a long history of use, abuse, trauma, war, fear, avoidance, misinterpretation, mistrust, bad attitude, witnesses to a wasted life and still, we seem to have an abundance of it all around us. Maybe the truth is that it can be hard for some of us to realize the need to stop using it even though it doesn't work as a teaching or communicating tool or even as a way to feel better. We usually feel worse if not stupid about it all. If we are going to make anything work, now is the time to get rid of old bad habits. There is no place in productivity for blame and anger.
WHEN IS IT TIME TO WORK AND WHEN IS IT TIME TO GET PAID?
In The 80/20 Principle Richard Koch under "A PRIMER FOR TIME REVOLUTIONARIES," suggests, "Make the difficult mental leap of disassociating effort and reward". If we limit ourselves to getting paid when we do some work, we limit our opportunities. That is exactly what we learned in school. We learn that rewards come from doing what you are told and taught or being a good boy. It is what we learn when we go get our first job. That first paycheck feels good if we kept it ourselves. If not we learned from and envied other people who did.
A more correct time, strongly evidenced, to go to work is when we find work that needs to be done, especially when what needs to be done is right around us, nearby, within our reach and therefore to be considered maybe our responsibility. I don't know for sure but I think sometimes we might find, the time to go to work, is when we find out how to do it in an easier way than what is already known. If you have found a better way to do anything, there may be a market in it.
When we find work we plan, what to do, how long it will take and the costs, and how long the benefits of the work will last. If we are looking at work in ways that other workers and opportunists do not we will find new ideas about it. If we agree the work needs to be done and commit to as an experiment, the time for considering how to get paid could be effective.
With that having been said, the largest part of this type of work will sometimes be the investigation and interpretation of the work. To expand the effectiveness of what will be a common task of deciding how and how much to get paid, we will include the matter in our pay schedule. It will help with becoming familiar with pay and interpretation of work. It will get easier with experience.
The work and pay concepts we generally use stick to our progress like a ball and chain. When it is time to make improvements we need to be released first, that is paid or promise of pay, before we can move forward. Of course there comes a time when a response to receiving our due is in order but before I respond, I want to be sure I am scheduled or on my way to becoming the best at what I do.
INFORMATION OR MENTAL CLUTTER?
Considering the flow of information and instructions over time from the many sources it comes, the drain of excess thoughts gets clogged and the towering stairway to generating the use of new information gets jammed when concepts and instructions are not reinterpreted and maintained after times of change.
Information has a relationship to change with some of that relationship being influenced by change. Time, on the other hand, is constant and is not influenced at all. This idea invigorates the notion that information may need regular maintenance. Regularly in all societies, history books seem to say, to many concepts of how to live life and maintain image, without creating conflict against established concepts and friends, gets handed down over generations until the time comes when ordinary people can recognize and respond to the individual movement that is needed. The time is ripe for this movement, in the subject of work, to take place.
Workers are currently capable, with training, of opportunity search and forward movement in any part of America. That is any location as well as any subject and any conflict or difficulty that America or we have as a people. Indications are fully consistent that we would have a very different experience as group members than we do individually. Individually it all seems so hopeless and a waste of time. There is so much to know but yet getting through college can be difficult when we get laid off every other year or a new neighbor moves in the complex with unacceptable habits and its' time to move again.
As the conditions in our society change and technology increases we have more opportunity to investigate, correctly interpret and challenge the conditions and source of problems that have and may affect us. In fact we no longer have good options to just ignore these conditions. "average real income rose by 36%, yet the comparable figure for non-supervisory workers fell by 14%." "During the 1980s, all of the gains went to the top 20% of earners, and a mind-boggling 64% of the total increase went to the top 1%." The 80/20 Principle. These numbers indicate that the benefits of creating, managing and owning our work environment is more rewarding now than it would have been before the 1980s.
To be more descriptive, we have an excess of grace and blessing of goodness represented by any excess of pay to individual people. I define excessive pay as any amount beyond what the recipient will likely benefit from and be able to manage productively for the sake of monetary flow in the society we live. Excess is not just something that can be ignored. It is likely to be a source of terrible conditions and intentions growing around everybody.
Even the learning experience will be different than what we had in schools. The schools and education methods that America used when I was in school was designed to make a good worker out of me rather than for the purpose of teaching me how to make a good life and a good society. I can see now that they thought they new how to make a good society and all I had to do was follow the plan. If you have had a similar experience I can understand if you don't want to learn. If you didn't have a particularly good experience with learning the first time you might think that the experience you had is the experience of learning. It is not.
Learning is a wonderful experience and can be for you. It can be a wonderful part of work. Technology enables this for us. Continuous learning is a must and an adventure of a lifetime. The lifestyle I suggest is different than what you are used to, not harder. What is hard is living with the disappointment of accepting a second best life and second best choices that we were taught to make and trying to work for a living while you try to keep it off your mind. When you overcome those choices and make choices that support you to do what you want to do, life will change for you.
Envision habits are helpful to the situations above and can help clear up the mental clutter and replace it with a sense of direction. An example of how I plan to approach the idea of using vision is to spend about ten minutes in each of about four separate meetings with the group to discuss what our plans are and how capable we are of achieving them plus fifteen additional minutes to discuss what the benefits are to working or employment in groups. This is also a time for training and practice cessions in shared vision as described in The Fifth Discipline. Peter Senge.
Environment Building
Most of our environments I depend on are man made, they are not God given, and they are not just something that happens as part of the turning of the Earth. Part of being Human is to create the environment we believe we can thrive in. Some people seem to create environments while some seem to accept what ever is created. Some of the latter seem miserable. "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man". George Bernard Shaw.
Creating our own environments requires complete thoughts or thoughts in complete or comprehensive patterns. Complete thought patterns can be difficult at first. It requires consideration of where the thoughts you are having come from. We must consider and accept that almost all of the information that we know may be actually partial information, partial truths or partially correct or complete. Completing each thought, interpretation and belief is mind-boggling.
